Thighs and Lies: The Oprah KFC Coupon Scam

Oprah and KFC lie about Free Coupons
Boycott Oprah & KFC’s unthinkfc.com due to coupon scam

On 5/5/09 and 5/6/09, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Oprah have proven that there really is no such thing as a free lunch. Especially if you cannot or will not permit malware/spyware to be installed on your computer (not to mention give those folks your personal information). KFC decided to go with the infamous Coupons.com scumbags to offer up four free chicken meal coupons through the Oprah Winfrey show. Coupons.com requires the customer to give personal information as well as install a pernicious piece of software that leaves behind things you really don’t want left behind. See unthink.com

That might have been fine had Oprah, KFC, and Coupons.com been up front about the steep hidden prices their customers and viewers pay and the privacy implications. Interestingly, KFC, Oprah, and Coupons.com do not reveal the Privacy Policy from the coupon page (or any other page during the time of my testing.) It was inaccessible. I’m hoping that this violates federal statutes or regulations concerning privacy because the ability to download the software, create an account, and print the coupons should NOT have been possible if the privacy policy was not available. Furthermore, KFC failed to put in place a system of handling people that had trouble installing the software or could not or would not, for a myriad of reasons, install the software. Their only solution was to force you to find another computer to infect. Naturally, they refuse access to the coupons for people that use Linux and other Unix variants.

KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) and Oprah discriminate against people and violate customers’ trust and privacy as well as potentially harming customer and viewer computers.

I, for one, will be boycotting KFC for a very long time; and I’m the type that writes off companies for life. And Oprah should fire someone for this coupon travesty. How embarrassing!

UPDATE: As of early December, 2009, I have not heard from KFC despite its promise to contact me. Nor, incidentally, has Oprah’s people apologized for this as far as I know.  Consequently, my family still has not spent a single cent at any KFC and will not patronize KFC until further notice.
